Is a solar battery worth it in Portugal? (2026)

Resposta rápida

A battery pays off when you have significant night-time consumption, want energy independence or backup during power cuts. If you use most of your energy during the day, a system without a battery pays for itself faster. Price: around €3,500 to €4,500 per 5 kWh installed.

The battery is the decision that most divides people going solar. The honest answer isn't “yes” or “no” — it depends on your consumption profile.

What a battery does (and doesn't do)

Without a battery, the energy you produce but don't use immediately is exported to the grid at a low price. With a battery, you store that surplus for the evening — raising self-consumption and independence. It doesn't increase panel output; it changes when you use the energy.

How much it costs

CapacityAdded cost (installed)Suited to
5 kWh€3,500 – €4,500Couple / family with some night-time use
10 kWh€6,500 – €8,500Large family, heat pump, backup
Indicative 2026 figures for tier-1 lithium (LFP) batteries, installed. Confirmed at the technical survey.

When a battery IS worth it

  • You have significant night-time use (family home in the evening, heat pump, EV charging at night).
  • You want protection against power cuts (hybrid system with backup mode).
  • You want maximum independence from the grid.
  • You live in an area with frequent outages.

When it's NOT worth it (or less so)

  • Consumption is almost all during the day (remote work, no one home at night).
  • The bill is low — the extra saving from a battery is small.
  • The goal is the fastest possible payback: without a battery it's shorter.

Our honest recommendation

Many clients start without a battery (fast payback) and leave the system ready to add one later, when it makes sense (e.g. when buying an EV). We assess your case without pushing the more expensive option.

Frequently asked questions

Is a solar battery worth it?

It depends on your consumption. A battery mainly pays off when you have significant night-time use, want energy independence or backup during power cuts. If almost all your usage is during the day, a system without a battery has a faster payback.

How much does a solar battery cost?

A tier-1 lithium (LFP) battery costs, installed, around €3,500 to €4,500 per 5 kWh, and €6,500 to €8,500 per 10 kWh, depending on the brand, inverter power and system integration.

Does a battery keep the lights on during a blackout?

Yes, if the system is hybrid and the inverter has a backup function. The home keeps running on stored energy even when the public grid is down.

How long does a solar battery last?

Lithium (LFP) batteries typically carry a 10-year warranty and thousands of charge cycles, retaining a good share of capacity by the end of that period.
